Senator Durbin Announces Grant for Central Illinois Regional Airport

(June 3, 2009 Bloomington , IL ) A Federal Aviation Administration grant in the amount of $750,000 is on its way to the Central Illinois Regional Airport thanks to the good news shared by the Office of Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois (D-IL).  The funds will be used to complete the financial package for a new Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) Building at the airport.  The new building, which is already in the design phase, will house the airport’s fleet of snow removal and maintenance equipment.

"Today's grant will allow the Central Illinois Regional Airport to make needed improvements and upgrades that will help them serve travelers more safely and efficiently," said Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL).  "These important projects will also create good paying jobs in the region during the current construction season."

With a total projected construction cost of $5.1 million, the $750,000 grant will ensure the project moves forward toward a projected Fall 2010 completion.

“This is certainly wonderful news for the airport and we are most appreciative of Senator Durbin’s assistance in securing funds for our airport.” said Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority Chairman Paul Harmon. “Winter operations are extremely important and housing and maintaining this equipment in one facility with easy access to our airfield is crucial.”

The Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal completed another record year in 2008 with a total of 532,870 passengers.  This was CIRA’s sixth consecutive year of increases in passenger traffic and its third straight year of record setting passenger numbers.  For more info rmation please visit www.cira.com.##
