Central Illinois Regional Airport Recipient of $1 ML Grant

Senator Durbin’s Assistance Allows Airport to Move Safety Project Forward

BLOOMINGTON, IL (Thursday, January 22, 2009)…The Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal (BMI) is excited to announce that, through the support of Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), it will be receiving a $1,000,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.  This grant will be used to complete a project to enhance safety and wildlife control at the airport by upgrading the perimeter fencing that secures the Central Illinois Regional Airport airfield.

“We want to thank Senator Durbin for his assistance in securing these discretionary funds.” said Paul Harmon, Chairman of the Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority. “This sizeable grant will allow us to move forward on this very important project and the Senator’s assistance is much appreciated.”

The $1,000,000 will fund Phase III of a multi-phased fencing project that began in 2007.  Phase I is complete. Phase II is scheduled for construction and completion this spring.  These funds will allow completion of Phase III in 2009.  The project will provide an enhancement that will help the airport meet new FAA standards for security and safety.

“I am happy to support the Airport Authority in their effort to increase the safety of travelers at the Central Illinois Regional Airport ,” said Durbin. “Not only will this project address the vital and ongoing need for wildlife control related to airport safety but it will put people to work in central Illinois .”

Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal completed another record year in 2008 with a total of 532,870 passengers.  This was CIRA’s sixth consecutive year of increases in passenger traffic and its third straight year of record setting passenger numbers.  For more info rmation, please visit www.cira.com.##
